Gay Marriage Amendment
When folks are given the opportunity to vote for (or against) a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, let's at least hope they know what they are voting for.
It seems many ordinary citizens believe that marriage is a sacred church institution in which two people, one man and one woman, are joined together in the sight of God. This is only one definition of marriage, and NOT the one your congressmen are debating now, or the one you will be voting about in November in many states, including right here in Tennessee.
The marriage amendment before Congress and on the ballots in many states, has nothing to do (and should have nothing to do) with God, religion or holy matrimony. The marriage most gay people are seeking is simply a legal contract between the couple and the government. That contract will give us the same legal protections and rights as any other citizen. Such rights include inheritance, medical decisions, joint tax returns, etc. Ordinary stuff the rest of America already enjoys.
If you don't want your church to perform these ceremonies, that's fine. Gays can marry at the court house, or in one of the many churches that does not discriminate.
But please, please, please, make sure you know what you are doing if you vote to discriminate against an entire group of people; don't do it just to keep us out of your church.
And if you call yourself a Christian, ask yourself what Jesus would do:
I believe Jesus would come to the wedding...and bring the wine.
